Montgomery Township is currently seeking an Assistant Parks and Recreation Director.  Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Starting salary of $71,834.00 with a comprehensive benefit package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and professional development opportunities.   

General Statement of Position: 

Under the direction and supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director, the Assistant Parks and Recreation Director will develop the operational plans for the Parks and Recreation Department and staff to plan, direct, evaluate and implement the programs and services of the Parks and Recreation Department including recreation programs and parks maintenance. 

Other duties include but are not limited to supervising youth and adult programing, recruiting, interviewing and evaluating seasonal part-time and full-time employees and assist in the coordinating of community events.  Inherent in this position is public relations, customer service and problem resolution. 

Job Duties / Responsibilities:

Oversight of day-to-day Parks and Recreation Department operations.

Direct oversite of the Aquatic Staff including Pool Supervisors and Aquatics Director.

Direct and assist the Program Coordinator and/or Recreation Specialist with the planning and administration of youth programs and special events.

Develops, coordinates and supervises community recreation, social and cultural programs; and assists the Director of Parks and Recreation in the planning and administration of the Department’s divisions, programs and activities. 

Assist with park upgrades, quotes and RFPs and miscellaneous requests

Assists and assures parks and facilities are safe for public use through the supervision and oversight of regular inspections, and preventive and ongoing maintenance.

Assists with researching, writing and administering grants to enhance Department programs

Effectively promotes and represents the Parks and Recreation department in the community 

Recruit, interview, train and supervise seasonal staff necessary for all camps.

Manage all human resources documentation and payroll for Aquatics programs and camps.

Assist the Parks and Recreation Director with the development and implementation of department policies and procedures.

Assists in the preparation of the department’s Annual budget review; management and implementation of capital improvements.

Makes recommendations for fee schedules and projects revenues for budget-making.

Coordinates use and rental of facilities

Assist with the management of facilities and other departmental duties as assigned

Attend programs, special events, trainings, orientations, and meetings as required.

Act as Director in the Director’s absence.

Required Key Technical Skills & Knowledge:

MS Office Suite

Recreation Program Planning and Organizing

Ability to translate strategic and operational goals into suitable assignments and instruction to staff 

Ability to supervise, train and evaluate employees.

Customer Service and problem resolution

Vendor Management (RFPs, Bids, Quotes)

 

Desired Skills:

Management Principals & Techniques

Human Resources and Payroll management (recruit, hire, evaluate)

Pool Management

 

Education / Certification / License Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in recreation or closely related field and 3-5 years of progressive experience in municipal recreation or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • 2 years of supervisory responsibilities.

Education / Certification / License Desired:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management or related field. 
  • Financial oversite experience: program & facility related budgets.
  • Aquatics facility management experience.
  • Certified Park and Recreation Profession Certification CPRP 

 

                             

Physical Requirements:

  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing during the day.  Must be able to lift and move equipment and materials in excess of 50lbs.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors as this position entails site visits to parks, trails, outdoor facilities, camps, etc. 

Additional Requirements:

  • Effective 9/1/11, all employees of State and local government must reside in the State of NJ, unless exempted.
  • Must have a valid NJ Driver’s License.
