We are looking for 2 Laborers in our Parks/Open Space Department who will work under the direct supervision of the Conservation Stewardship Technician, or other appropriately designated supervisor, who lays out the details of specific assignments or establishes routine procedures, which are followed on a daily basis. Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks including manual labor and some operation of automotive and power-driven equipment, in the maintenance of pathways and open space. Hours are Mon-Fri 7:00 am - 3:30 pm $18.72 per hour. Great benefit package. Job Duties / Responsibilities:
Examples of work are:
- Maintains trails, footbridges, boardwalks, picnic areas and other passive use recreation areas and amenities;
- Construct trails, monitor ongoing maintenance needs;
- Operate grounds maintenance equipment (e.g lawnmowers, chainsaws), power tools, hand saws, etc.;
- Maintains tree plantings, including planting and pruning, properly mulching, tree and/or stump removal;
- Removal of invasive species; clearing of brush as needed;
- Assists with the planting of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, flowers and other open space related vegetation;
- Field mowing, as needed;
- Digs trenches and does manual grading;
- Install and repair fences; install trail markers;
- Performs maintenance of parking areas;
- Shovels gravel and sand, as well as snow;
- Collects garbage, recycling and other refuse;
- Loads, lifts and moves supplies and equipment;
- Works overtime as required for events;
- Must be available for snowplowing and salting, as required;
- Performs other work as required or assigned; will be required to work with Public Works when needed.
Required Key Technical Skills & Knowledge:
- Ability to perform manual tasks either alone or as a member of a group
- Ability to work well with both fellow staff and supervisory personnel
- Ability to understand and carry-out oral and written instructions
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to work under varying (and sometimes extreme) temperatures and weather conditions
- Ability to follow safety protocols as directed
Desired Skills:
- Prefer experience in manual labor (private or public sector)
- Familiarity with basic motorized equipment and power tools
- Knowledge of PPE
- Basic carpentry skills
Education / Certification / License Required:
- Valid NJ State motor vehicle driver’s license
Equivalent combination of experience and training in public or private sector which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Education / Certification / License Desired:

High School diploma or equivalent thereof required; or equivalent combination of experience and training which provides for the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
